Illegal Downloading: The Gift Or The Curse Of The Music Industry

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 in Best Posts, Music, The Power of Digital

I just watched a very interesting Panorama special on the BBC about Internet music sharing.

It talked about a proposed new law that is threatening to disconnect the millions of internet users who unlawfully download free music, films and TV. Jo Whiley looked at how broadband use at home may never be the same, and could even be cut off. It left me thinking is Illegal downloading the Gift or the Curse for the music industry?

Some interesting facts on why it is a curse:
- Record Industry claims to be losing £200m …

How Youtube made an international music star in a weekend…by accident.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 in Best Posts, Music, Social Media

One of the funniest and yet brilliant music success stories i’ve seen actually happened to my former flatmate, Lee Kirby.
About 3 years ago, Lee picked up the guitar for the first time and spent hours practising and writing songs. During this period he also started singing songs in Vietnamese, which was not surprising because he loves the Vietnamese culture. This started 7 years earlier when he said he would be the 1st English player to play professional football in Vietnam. He achieved this and since then his love affair began. …

Monday, January 11, 2010 in Best Posts, Music, Social Media, Top 10

Twitter was definitely THE social media network phenomenon of 2009. Whether as a means to occupy us whilst bored at work or on the move using phones, everyone seemed to get the Twitter bug and became addicted to the challenge of communicating in no more than 140 characters!
One of Twitter’s big attractive features was that it bridges …

Your network determines your net worth.

I have worked in music and online for over 10 years now and I used to think that it was just this industry where it was not based on talent alone to break in. However over the years I realised it’s every industry. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
One of the reasons social networks have become so powerful is because people are becoming famous overnight. Unless you were already a celeb, the 1 thing in common people who became famous all had were powerful communities ie, …

One Of The Things I Learnt From Usher!!!

Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in Marketing, Music, What I learnt from....

When it comes to being media trained there is one key skill:

Have at least one key point that you want to get across.

If an interviewer asks you only one question, try and get this point across.  If 10 questions are asked , try and get this point across.  Even if no question is asked, start a conversation and get your point across.
Last year I met Usher to talk about his album.  Usher has been around for over a decade and is very well media trained and not much gets …

Good To See A Musician Using The Power Of Twitter.

Find more videos like this on ThisIs50.com : IF IT’S HOT IT’S HERE!
Yet again, the power of Social Media is becoming more and more important in the direction of music. Watch the video above with rapper Fabolous talking about how he changed direction with his new project based on Twitter. I like seeing or hearing an artist who listens to his fans and then acts upon it. Whats good about twitter is that it gives any artist (or anyone with talent) leverage to take feedback to their record label. If …

Southpark Didn’t Murder Kanye West, Social Media Did.

I am sure you have all seen or heard about Kanye West’s appearance on ‘South Park’ last week. Most people probably watched it online – I know I did – but would the hype, news stories and even Kanye himself taking to his blog site to comment about it, have happened without the influence of social media?  I think not.  Here’s why.
The Pre-Match Hype: As soon as it was announced that Kanye West was going to be on ‘South Park’, the bloggers were the first to go crazy about it.  …

One Of The Things I Learnt From 50 Cent!!!

I have been fortunate enough to meet many music artists on my travels, and i have a lot of very interesting stories about a few of them too. I have also learnt a lot from them, not just by interviews but also watching the way they hold and conduct themselves.  One of the people who have impressed me the most was 50 Cent.  I have interviewed a lot of rappers and the one thing I can guarantee from 90% of them is that they will be late.  Now this can …
