The Most Important Website of ’09

Twitter Search

Twitter Search

This post is going to be short, brief and slightly diverted from the usual structure, but I have been meaning to write this for a while.

search.twitter.com is my prediction for website of the year. Once the numbers start picking up and it hits that tipping point, it will change the game.  Here is why:

  • It is a real-time search and search will always be popular.  I cannot see it overtaking Google.com but it could potentially overtake Yahoo, MSN and Youtube as the next popular search engine
  • Every major brand will need to track this site for information and research about themselves and the competition.  (and when I say brand I do not mean product.  Individuals as well)
  • Google is the most profitable website based on their adwords model. It can be easily replicated here.
  • Social networking and search are the two most revisited sites on the Internet.  You either get a search site (Google) or the social networking site (Facebook).  Twitter has managed to combine both, and very well!
  • Search plugins, Search plugins, Search plugins.

Every major company will want to buy Twitter and if you think the price of MySpace, Bebo and Youtube were expensive, I think Twitter will go for a lot more, mainly because of search.twitter.com. Not many websites have a proven revenue model but the clever guys at Twitter obviously thought about this from the start.

My prediction: It is only a matter of time before Google makes the bid.

I actually think Twitter could overtake Google in the next few years… and so do they!! I think they will put an offer in and it will get turned down. When Gmail went down a few weeks ago the news broke on Twitter then the next day twitter.com/Google was born!

    Peep this:

A Six Steps Guide – 12 minutes of twitter a day can look like this:
    1) Share your one quality thought. Be authentic, don’t sell. Offer good value to your followers.
    2) Skim over past tweets for interesting information.
    3) Check your Direct Messages. Reply to anyone that requires it.
    4) Leave 2-4 Direct Messages for people you want to build relationships with.
    5) Retweet 1 useful piece of information to your following.
    6) Search for 1 person to follow that you want to learn from or get valuable updates.
