We have all been there on the other side of the desk with the ‘careers expert’ who has been fully trained to say no! Or send you to the armed forces, local supermarket or a ‘great’ admin job! Not saying there is anything wrong with doing these jobs if that’s what you truely want to do, but that’s the key what do you really want to do?
The only way to get a head start is to do your own work experience, make your own contacts and learn everything you can from people. When you’re given the worst job to do, treat it like it’s the best, be helpful and listen to what people ask you to do.
If you don’t know what you want to do then get those magazines like hot courses or college prospectus read the course descriptions and something may capture your interest. Work shadowing is good or ask others what you think you might be good at.
It’s never too late to start, change or move up. Just be motivated, positive and focused. If you think you can do the role that is half the battle.
